Checklist: treat metadata as publishing infrastructure

DOI metadata connects article pages to discovery systems, citation tools, reference links, and long-term scholarly records. A DOI without accurate metadata is much less useful to readers, libraries, and indexing services.

Metadata quality does not require perfection in every field, but it does require a consistent review process. The journal should know which fields are required, which fields are optional, and who is responsible for corrections.

Checklist: core article fields

Review article titles, subtitles, authors, affiliations, ORCID identifiers, abstracts, keywords, publication dates, issue data, language, article URLs, file URLs, and license information.

These fields should be consistent across the article landing page, PDF, OJS metadata, and deposited DOI record. Differences between these sources can create confusion and future correction work.

Checklist: references, funding, and rights

References should be reviewed for completeness when they are included in the DOI workflow. DOI links inside references can improve linking, but they need careful checking and realistic editorial expectations.

Funding and license metadata should be captured when available. Clear license information supports reuse, and structured funding data can help connect articles with funder records where applicable.

Checklist: correction workflows

Metadata errors are normal, but the journal should have a correction process. The team should know how to identify errors, update OJS metadata, redeposit or correct records, and document what changed.

The DOI Validator can support routine checks. JournalsHQ plans and contact channels can help teams review DOI metadata practices and design a workflow that is sustainable for their editorial capacity.
